There was a reason why Cooperstown overflowed this weekend with Yankees fans. Mariano Rivera not only got his Hall of Fame induction, he did so as the first-ever inductee unanimously voted in by the writers after setting the all-time record for saves, post-season saves and numerous other career marks. Maybe it’s a measure of an increased respect for closers that Rivera entered the Hall of Fame with Lee Smith, previously snubbed but the all-time regular-season saves leader for a long time, and a year after Trevor Hoffman, no. 2 all-time in saves.
