Four of the last eight times the year ended in a “9”, the Yankees won it all, and were dominant in most of those instances. In 1939, it was the Cincinnati Reds swept in four games of the World Series. In 1949, Casey Stengel’s first season at the helm ended by handling the Brooklyn Dodgers. Then came 1999, and the Yankees sweeping the Atlanta Braves for the second of three straight titles, and finally 2009, when the first season in the new Yankee Stadium was christened by knocking off the defending champs from Philadelphia.
