This week in August is always a bit sad because of what happened 40 years ago. Thurman Munson, the beloved catcher and Yankee captain, lost his life attempting to land his plane at an airfield in his hometown of Canton, Ohio. A fixture behind the plate throughout the 1970s, Munson was the 1976 American League MVP and then led the Yankees to back-to-back World Series titles. After his death, it took 17 years for the most successful franchise in American sports to win the Fall Classic again. Clearly that’s not a coincidence.
